Woolgathering originally referred to the act of gathering tufts of wool that had been shed by sheep and caught on bushes. For Élise Ory and Heleen Klopper, Woolgathering started with a pile of coloured bits of wool fibre, leftovers from Heleen’s Woolfiller kits.

They engaged in a hands-on process, starting with this pile and a selection of raw wool fleeces, guided by two main questions: How can Dutch wool be revalued so that it is no longer considered a by-product or waste? And how can one rethink its use and quality to inspire repair and making, and to ask what quality actually means? Through fieldwork and encounters with farmers, shepherds and sheep, they re-carded the wool, spun and knitted it.

The Woolgathering installation gathers in one room the tools, the material experiments, photographic documentation and the outcomes of the project. The wool in its different processed states will be available to purchase. Woolgathering has also developed into a publication designed by César Rogers, with the photographs of Lou-Lou van Staaveren and a text Messy and generous, all at once written by researcher, artist and Warehouse member Femke de Vries.

Many thanks to Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst and Stimuleringsfonds for their generous support!
